Healthcare Exploration Made Easy

Methodist College is making it easy for students interested in nursing to explore the health care field with their Nurse In Action program.

This programs allows anyone 16 years and older with an interest in pursuing a career in health care the opportunity to shadow a current Methodist College nursing student as he or she provides patient care. Participants are not required to have any completed coursework, but they will have to sign a confidentiality waiver.

Alissa Selburg, Director of Admissions and Advisement at Methodist College of UnityPoint Health – Peoria, says “The students are really put into the shoes of a healthcare provider. They are wearing lab coats and gloves. It really is an accurate snapshot of the industry and what their potential future career would look like.”

This semester the program takes place on Tuesdays at 9 am at UnityPoint Health – Methodist Hospital. The job shadow participant is matched with a nursing student who is in the internship phase of their schooling. The participant will be in the hospital clinical setting as they visit patient rooms and shadow the nursing student. The participant also gets to eat lunch with the nursing student so they can ask questions about their job and education to see what being a nursing student is really like.

Participants are not just limited to one visit. Many come back multiple times to experience different floors and see what other student’s experiences are like. High school students who participate may even be able to use this as an excused college-visit day if their counselor allows it.

The program has been in place for about four years and Selburg says, “Many of the students who participate in the Nurse In Action Program end up enrolling in Methodist College. Some of the previous participants who are now enrolled and in the internship phase of their schooling are helping their own job shadow students.”
